One for the Sabbath

Here's a great little talk from TED, about the journalist from Esquire magazine who attempted to follow ALL of the laws in the Bible for a year. Including the attempted stoning of an elderly adulterer, including out-talking a Jehovah's witness, including a stint as a shepherd. Enjoy!

Thanks for this. One thing I like is getting a wider, analytical perspective on faith and religion.

I watched Religulous recently and while I found it interesting I found it generally mean-spirited. Sure, Bill Maher is a smart guy and his witticisms are funny, but sometimes I found him to be overly disrespectful.

The problem is it was hard to find fault in what he was saying. He made fun of people for believing in an all-knowing being that lives in the sky.

Where AJ Jacobs succeeds is by pointing out the Bible's uses by indicating literal interpretation is ridiculous but without being an ass about it. He also doesn't discount faith entirely.

Anyway, thanks for the link!

Oddly enough, the same page has a link to Julia Sweeney's talk about Letting Go of God.

Mark: have you watched that talk? And if so, what's it about/is it good?

I haven't watched the actual talk, but I remember reading a bit about Sweeney's life story. I think it had to do with a number of things: her changing thoughts about Catholicism; she had cancer; probably some other life events.

And now I have watched Julia Sweeney's TED talk. It is quite amusing and she throws out some thought provoking things. It's just the first part of a much longer performance that certainly seems to be worth watching.
