SoHo in New York, and Mile End in Montreal come to mind. SoHo has been thoroughly gentrified and Mile End is on its way. Both were instrumental in fostering a hugely influential arts scene due to cheap industrial living/workspaces.
It's such a completely idiotic move that puts a blemish on this city I love so much. It's so unfortunate that those who contribute nothing but $$$ seem to take such a high precedence over those who contribute so much more to our city if not in a monetary form. I have worked at both Nuit Blanche events and I was also attendance for the Movement Movement at the ROM. These artists make such a massive impact on our city, it's unthinkable that they would be marginalized in such a way. We as a society need to take a long, hard look at our priorities and make some difficult but necessary adjustments.
